Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Title of Site:

KeepVid

URL:

http://www.keepvid.com/

Description of Site:

KeepVid is a free site that allows you to download videos from sites like YouTube, Facebook, and many others. Simply copy and paste the URL of the video you'd like to download into the bar at the top of the KeepVid page, click download, and then select the type of file you'd like to save the video as. Some options include mp4, mp3, flv, and more.

There are ads that can pop up if you click on the advertisement buttons. There is no specific section for teachers and students. Students in my school do not have access to different sites like YouTube, so this website, while appropriate, would not be benficial for students. The benefits lie in the teacher's ability to save videos to share offline. Students who do not have access to YouTube or other sites in school will still be able to watch the videos provided by their teacher simply by opening a file. Students will also be able to find and share educational videos of their own by using KeepVid at home! KeepVid is easy for students to use and is certainly appropriate for any student who knows how to read, follow basic directions, and with a basic computer background. Students in grades four and up should be able to use KeepVid successfully.

Educational Uses of Site

KeepVid can be used with Flipped Classrooms, for small group work, or classroom projects where students are required to find or watch videos. This is an excellent tool for teachers who'd like to share video files on their teacher webpages or wikis for students to view both in and out of the classroom. Using KeepVid also allows teachers (or students) to save videos without having to worry about inappropriate ads that are typically seen on YouTube or other similar sites.

Review of Site

I believe that KeepVid is a convenient and easy to use tool. This is a tool that I use in my classroom and planning on a regular basis. The site provides users with the option of saving videos as mp4, mp3, video only files, sound only files, etc. This can be beneficial if a teacher only likes the audio of a video, only the visuals, etc. They are easily able to select a file that is best for their individual use. Then, teachers will have these videos saved to their computer for future use. This helps with future planning in years to come!
